Il tanto atteso evento estivo londinese, la Summer Exhibition, ritorna anche quest'anno presso la Royal Academy of Arts, dal 13 Giugno al 20 Agosto 2023.


La Summer Exhibition si distingue come uno degli eventi artistici più antichi di Londra, tenutosi ogni anno dal 1769 presso la Royal Academy of Arts, nel cuore della città, a Piccadilly, all'interno della splendida Burlington House. Questa esibizione particolare, sin dal XVIII secolo, ha l'obiettivo di promuovere le arti attraverso l'educazione e le esposizioni di opere contemporanee di giovani artisti. Per 255 anni, ogni estate, la rassegna offre un'ampia panoramica sull'arte contemporanea inglese (e non solo), ed è ormai considerata una delle esposizioni artistiche più interessanti e originali del paese. È infatti la mostra temporanea più antica al mondo, con opere in vendita, aperta sia ad artisti affermati che emergenti o ancora sconosciuti: tra i primi espositori del XVIII secolo, ricordiamo pittori del calibro di Reynolds, Constable e Turner. Tutto ciò che i visitatori possono ammirare alla Summer Exhibition rappresenta realmente ciò che sta accadendo nel mondo dell'arte contemporanea: arte nuova, recente e innovativa.

Quest'anno, la mostra è coordinata e diretta dal celebre pittore britannico, David Remfry RA. Il tema principale ed il filo conduttore della 'Exhibition' quest'anno ruota attorno alla citazione "Only Connect", tratta dal noto romanzo Howards End scritto nel 1910 da Edward Morgan Forster. Il romanzo, quasi visionario, presenta un'autore capace di prevedere il futuro, anticipando e descrivendo situazioni e stili di vita che realmente si sono verificati nei decenni successivi. Un futuro caratterizzato da edifici sempre più numerosi che occupano quasi tutti i quartieri cittadini, vite frenetiche vissute tra centri commerciali e spazi cementizi, e leggi e stili di vita sempre più condizionati dalle aride e spietate leggi dell'economia di mercato.

    La mostra si svolge secondo un percorso artistico ben definito, incentrato su temi diversi che tengono conto sia delle speculazioni filosofiche che degli aspetti pratici e tecnici relativi alla vita attuale. È allestita in dieci ampie sale della storica dimora settecentesca, nelle quali sono esposte opere d'arte provenienti da tutto il mondo, realizzate da artisti noti o emergenti: un'ampia panoramica sull'arte contemporanea in tutte le sue possibili espressioni, una miscela incredibile di stili, tecniche, temi e colori. La Summer Exhibition quest'anno espone oltre 1200 opere tra tele a olio, acquerelli, sculture, incisioni, installazioni, ma anche fotografie e video, un vero e proprio spettacolo diverso da qualsiasi altra esposizione artistica.

    Sono presenti molti artisti di fama internazionale all'edizione 2023, che si presenta particolarmente colorata e vivace; tra questi ricordiamo la scultrice parigina Sheila Hicks con la sua coloratissima opera Mercurials; l'installazione Rest in Pieces, or the Squatters di Rayan Gander; il dipinto Five StonesWind (for John Cage) di Edmund De Waal. Durante la Summer Exhibition quest'anno, nel cortile di Burlington House è possibile ammirare l'obelisco Moonlight Towers, realizzato dall'architetto Jonah Luswata, che ricorda i primi lampioni londinesi a gas dell'età vittoriana, simili ad enormi torri illuminate. Come negli anni precedenti, la maggior parte dei lavori sono in vendita; un'occasione unica di possedere opere d'arte originali di importanti artisti contemporanei. Inoltre, parte del ricavato permette alla Royal Academy di continuare a fornire, gratuitamente, corsi di insegnamento post-laurea presso la RA School.
